Resume Skills
Writing a resume is not an easy task. Skills based resume is the best option to showcase your skills to the employer. In this type of resume, you need to decide, which achievements and qualities will be suitable for the job position you are applying for. You can add your career history and educational qualifications in the resume. Every job that you have done, has taught a new skill. Hence, you have to include both the job and skills in the resume.
A skill-based resume is prepared for an experienced person who has a variety of skill-sets that he/she has acquired throughout his/her career, an individual who is trying to change career and move away from his current vocation. This type of resume should still start with a career objective. Since you won’t be highlighting your work experience, the employer needs to see your career objective to understand how you intend to use your skills.
The points that need to be considered before writing a skill based resume:
- In the beginning, list all the skills that you have obtained from all the previous jobs. Make sure to mention those skills out of that list which will help you in the job you are applying for.
- Mention the skills in bold in this type of resume. In skill based resume, the resume is organized on the basis of your skills that you got from your previous job.
- Under each of the skill, you have to give details about where you learned it and how it has helped you. Use keywords to describe the skills that you have gained.
- You need to use particular keywords under each skill. For example, you have put "leadership" as one of the skills. You have to support it by describing things like leading a group of ten people, etc. in your resume.
Advantages of skills based resume are:
- You can emphasize on the personal attributes and achievements that have not been used in your last job.
- You can show the change in the direction of your career.
- You have done number of jobs and you need to summarize the entire work experience.
- You can include voluntary experience that you have.
- You can include the gaps in your work history due to unemployment, ill health, etc.
Disadvantages of skills based resume are:
- Career history is given secondary status in this type of resume. As skills are used prominently in the resume.
- The employers may not like the unusual format of this type of resume.
